Up at 7am. Had a really bad leg cramp this morning. I had laid in the backseat stretching my legs over the front seat (had put it down)....this proved to be a better way to sleep. At some point tho I need to look at how to best sleep in the car...maybe some sort of contraption to build like a cot thing. I'm guessing high fructose corn syrup or aspartame or too much sodium in the foods at restaurants I am eating at is causing my leg cramps and my left foot to hurt.
Did some stretching exercises....got better rebound this morning doing those. Left calf still pretty tight....so need to work on that. I had made the mistake of sleeping with my shoes on which tends to tighten up my lower legs and I think cut some of the circulation down a bit. Need to find better things to wear if I sleep in my car....street clothes don't really cut it for a decent nights sleep. For all the times I've slept in this car....it's clearly too small for me to get a decent night's sleep. And it's too cold to sleep outside....tho I should explore that some...maybe like a bivy sack from REI for outside or a air mattress of some rugged type.
Plan to spend some time writing at a Starbucks (off 3rd)...maybe later seeing what I saw last night when I got here what it looks like in the daytime.
Got to the Starbucks here...decent size, lots of people, busy and busy drive-up. The eye candy here is pretty stellar inside this coffee shop. Did a bit of photo-editing and writing here. It's 910am.
Saw my days of travel mixed up in my blog ....fixed that.
I decided that on Thursday I should see the Sun River Resort where we all stayed back in 1978 on the SJSU ski trip....and later attempt to get to Crater Lake and Klamath Falls. I mainly want to go to Klamath Falls to see the train station that we all came up on for the ski trip in '78.
Left Starbucks about 402pm after much writing. Time flies.
I am going to go roam around this Bend I like so much.
It's very ponderosa this environment, dry, but it's population is gone and home by 9pm. I am not so sure I could get used to that....tho the solitude is nice that time of night....not having to wait so later for it to be so.
Sure is a lot of traffic in the daytime around here....
There is a street fair downtown. I suspect it would be intimate by comparison to what is in Seattle. People here would get to know each other rather than just passing through.
I like downtown. It's nice during the day. The women here are awesome like they are in Boulder, Colorado.
There is so much to do here.
Gals here have that Aspen/Vail fashion going on....lots of that comfy western wear, denim lots....like that relaxed look.
Lots of outdoor gear stores here.
Old Mill District is an outdoor mall....up to date, pretty new...tho I think it's a nice place to visit...I would prefer the downtown stores more. It's pretty wide spread a place here.
Great area for walks this Riverbend Park area. Things happen here.
Micro Semi is here in the business park here by the Old Mill. Will have to explore this more. This is the tech area here.
I like how everything looks here. More outdoor, more wood, more earthy, clean, fit....not all modernized and overgrown. A mountain town.
It's hot temp here today, but I'm good with it.
Riverbend is a good place to live.
Lots of ski gear shops.
Seems to be big enough companies here.
14th street area housing.
Lots of good eats here around and on the 14th street.
Could go boldering here in Bend.
The Bulletin is likely the biggest and tallest structure for a newspaper company....the printing presses are inside...no wonder. Hard to imagine that such an area would need such a big paper. Later, I learned, they cover all of Central Oregon.
Dr. Wigle at Deschuttes Orthopediatrics ....a wellness doctor....go figure. Some guys just have the right names.
Regence is here.
Fancy homes in the hills here....this one section. Broken Top Club. Skyline Summit. I'm wondering who makes this kind of money to afford these. Shelvin Park, High Lakes, the community college area, a lot of great views here.
Paladin Data Corp.
This area is closest to what I've seen in the front range Colorado area.
4th/Butler Market industrial park.
Velox - software, Eoff....driving east now.
More affordable this east side area tho more dry and sparse.
My foot is feeling better.
Flying Frog kiosk....coffee place.
Got onto Hanby Road.....536pm.
Hardly any indians, asians here....mostly white. Learned later it is mostly a white place and not for any reason....just is.
East side area is a lot of tumbleweed at the farthest part away east, short trees, not much likely of water ....a bit of rock stuff.
Costco here, Whole Foods too. Shopping area here. Very new. 27th and hwy 20 here is where all the shopping is.
Bend has 80,000 people here. Feels like more people live here than what the sign says. Perhaps the surrounding area....it's more like .5 to a million.
Lots of medical stuff here galore...north of Costco.
Bend Medical Center....so this is where the wealth of the area is at. Huge place here.
St. Charles Hospital....lots of cancer stuff here...will have to check out why. Heart lung cancer centers.
Left on 8th about 555pm, right on Greenwood. Back to 3rd on College. Still lots of traffic....but at 9pm there will be nothing. It's like people get out their cars for the say, but they only last till about 9 or so. Then they have to take them home or they stop running.
Got on Franklin to go up to Bachelor. Went through old Bend....now this I like a lot. Best I've seen so far. Drake Park....just beautiful. I would spend a lot of time here for sure. Galveston....street that is....lots of little places here to enjoy eating at.
6-ish pm....got gas. 605.5 miles so far.
I have to keep remembering they serve gas here in Oregon and there is no sales tax.
I am very comfortable roaming around here in this Drake Park area. There is more vegetation here too. The houses look more lived in, more artsy. I can tell people love living here. The neighborhoods here remind me of Colorado. Definitely an option to live here rather than Colorado. With the new Oregon State U coming here....could be really great.
10 Barrel Brewing Company.
Summit West....as I head up to Mt. Bachelor....that's more ponderosa sparse and dry.
619pm.
Cascade Lakes ....there looks to be 15 such lakes...some 60 miles away. Huge sign saying how many miles to each one.
14 miles to Bachelor....626pm.
The economy here seems to be mainly supported by medical and Mt. Bachelor.
I think the signs I see for Sno Parks are for nordic and sledding.
638pm - got to the Sunriver / La Pine Junction....I am pretty sure that wasn't here when I was here back in '78 (confirmed this later after I found an article online about this short cut down to Sunriver). Got to Mt. Bachelor sometime then before 655pm. (see the next day for the link to the article talking about the new road from Sunriver to Mt. Bachelor).
I can see Mt Bachelor....so many memory markers are starting to kick in strong. I have entered the Mt. Bachelor area says the sign.
Looking back eastward....I can see forever.
I can see the lifts on Mt. Bachelor.
West Lodge ....main gate is closed, so can't go any further....darn. That's what I would have liked to have seen. That's where the buses had dropped us off. Not daring to go around those gates.
The Sunrise Lodge sign looks familiar....same as it likely would have back then, same graphics. That gate is closed as well. They just aren't open here yet. The sign looks like the ski lift tickets I have (that I brought up with me).
I stopped, waited for a car load of some college kids or bend guys to leave....I really needed to be here on my own.
I could feel Mary with me here. I could feel and see images of all those from the SJSU ski trip mingling around me.
'thank you mary for making this possible to see again....it has been so long'.
Heart 💓 .
I think words from "The Voice" by Celtic Woman says it's best for who has led me on this trip and to Mt. Bachelor: "I am the voice of your history, be not afraid, come follow me. Answer my call and I'll set you free." And I have come after being away since that ski trip in 1978....about 37 years! And mary has made this trip possible. For both I am very, very thankful and touched to the point of tears and that overwhelming joy.....the kind that I didn't want to stop feeling. I feel them now just writing this and each time I read these words. The experience being there at the base of this mountain....I am surely 'free' here. I strongly feel it being here.
My pamphlets confirm it is was West Lodge where we were at, but perhaps we did East or saw East at one time while up here. I spent a bit of time up here....very emotional, cried a bit here...I had made it. THIS was one of my most magical places dating back all these years...that's 37 years. I learned to ski here. I went on the ski trip because it was such a great deal.
From the original Winter Carnival Info page I have kept all these years:

I went on the ski trip because it was such a great deal.
From the original Winter Carnival Info page I have kept all these years:
- SJSU ASU Associated Students Winter Carnival '78
- Mt. Bachelor, Oregon .... Jan 8-13, 1978
- did not have to be a ski club member to go.
- $145 with student body card included: t-shirt, 4 nights lodging in condos at Sun River Resort, 5 days ski lifts at Mt. Bachelor, train from San Jose to Klamath Falls ...then Trailways buses to Sun River, and these buses would pick us up every morning to take us to Bend and then up to Mt. Bachelor and takes us back at the end of the day, back at the end of the week to Klamath Falls to the train station to take use back to San Jose.
- The train would include two lounge cars, music, liquor (tho we never saw that....it was there, but we didn't get any), parties and...fun people (up to 250 of us...and it was nearly that...I think at least 200.).
- Condos included kitchen, bath, bedrooms, fireplaces, color TV, private entrance and balcony. Resort would have tennis courts, sauna, ice rink, restaurant, Safeway store (in town...the buses took as there so we could buy enough food for each group for each condo ...this would be the old store in town nowadays...which is still there, just updated some)(as I remember...I was in a condo with maybe 5 to 7 of us)
- Activities included cocktail wine and cheese welcome party, broom hockey - that was a blast, beer race - on the slopes, bingo - very fun, Ballet ski lesson and demo, wine and cheese on the ski area, dance at the resort with band and drinks. Ski lessons at a discount. (as I remember....ski lessons, skis, bindings, boots and poles rentals were all half off.) (dinner was usually in our condos or at the restaurant or bar in the main Sunriver building)
- All events are free to activity card holders except the Bingo and maybe broom hockey....(we did have all that...very fun....and the broom hockey room I think is still there on my visit). The bingo game...there will be over $2000 worth of prizes...(mostly it was awesome name brand ski, bindings, boots and poles....much in packages....was really great)
As you can see...a damn good deal....couldn't pass that up....even tho I didn't know how to ski before making the trip. And Mt. Bachelor was just the best place to learn how. I didn't take lessons all the time....just mostly the mornings and then skied all the rest of the day until it was pickup time where the buses would take us back to Sunriver.....I think that was around 430pm or so...not sure.
We had to be up, have had breakfast and be ready by about 430-5-am-something for the buses (at Sunriver) to drive us up to Bend to then go up to Mt. Bachelor (you see....the roadway at Sunriver to the junction wasn't there yet). So it was a long ride from Sunriver in 1978 to get to Mt. Bachelor and be there by about 8am in the morning or before to make through getting out ski packages to rent and for some of us (like me) to get to our morning lessons. And, hence, reason to be off the slopes and into the buses at 430pm each day.
Here is a few pictures from the trip......my ski lift tickets....
From the phamphlets back then of Mt Bachelor's ski map, the lodge and more.....
After my experiences at Mt. Bachelor....I had gone on, after getting home (back then), to do more skiing in the Tahoe area over the next few years. I loved it. I would rent my skis, boots, bindings and poles at Mel Cotton's (1266 W San Carlos St, San Jose, Ca - still there in this location) (sporting goods store). I had skied at Alpine Meadows (just south of that was Olympic (Squaw) Valley....in fact from the top slopes of Alpine Meadows was a sign that said Squaw Valley border)(both north of Tahoe City), Kirkwood (southwest of South Lake Tahoe), never did do Heavenly near Stateline in Lake Tahoe, Northstar (northwest of Lake Tahoe). And I might have done Homewood near Tahoe Pines. These ski resorts were the closest and most fun to go up to from the SF Bay Area. Alpine Meadows and Northstar I had done when I was the high school church leader for 2 years at Zion Lutheran Church in San Jose, CA. Kirkwood was with my friend Randy (from high school ....he lived up in the Terrace neighborhood) and we would meet up with Chris Winters and his girlfriend and another guy I knew in high school - Bob Biegler- and his girlfriend. Kirkwood was the first place I learned to do moguls. Since those days tho....I haven't gone up since I had moved out of the Bay Area about 1984...usually because I would think my car wouldn't make it or I didn't have the right gear or money to go. But I am so glad that I did do it then. It was incredible fun.
So back to being at Mt Bachelor on this road trip.....
So got down to a McDonald's oh about 730pm or so. Left a msg for my friend Tom. Talked to my Dad tho for a bit about how much I loved it here. He told me about three guys he knew whom he worked with at HP...who had moved here back then and loved it for the weather and just general good healthy place to live....of course the pop was much lower back then. We had a good chat....talked of a couple he knew who had quit the work world to travel and write about it....I had mentioned that I could easily get used that if I could get paid for doing it....he said he loved my writing and comedy about it....(that was when I had the first blog that I am not re-writing because at one point on the trip I had stopped for a bit because it took so long with looking up websites for it).
I think that if I traveled and wrote about it....I would have a more comfortable vehicle....a van perhaps big enough to sleep in, small enough to get around the little roads, powerful enough to do the hills and rough roads. I would stay more often in motels. I would likely eat better. I'd have a studio somewhere as a perm home address. Do my bills online. Keep things to a minimum to focus on travel and writing. It's an intriguing idea.
Old Bend is my favorite neighborhood. It's got great energy. Here's one of those little libraries....along with artwork done by the homeowner....all of which is for sale.
Riverside area is nice too.
Great night life here it looks like. Had driven though town looking at it all.
846pm - stopped at Shari's for some dinner, to write and relax. Shari's had proven to be a good place for all that throughout my trip.
10pm - finished uploading my pictures, editing them and all.....checking sites to put in....and now I really need sleep. Got to the Walmart parking lot and setup for sleeping by 1044pm. Slept till about 2am....I was in the front seat...not bad for sleeping, but my feet were cold....walked barefoot on cold asphalt for a bit...that helped. Warmed up the car too. Put shoes and lotion on my legs and feet and off to Walmart to use the bathroom and after took a bit of a walk, exercise some, loosen up. My Rockport shoes seemed to help (tho when I got home I did take those back...ultimately they hurt my feet).
303am ...early October 15.....cold outside, maybe 40 or so....was good to walk. Tried crashing again.
607am...woke up...still too cold. I had put on my arm warmers around my legs...that helped and had slept at a better angle. My car is challenging to sleep in. Seemed no matter what I did to protect from the cold....it would seep in and I'd have to turn on the heat. Of course, the guy blow cleaning the grounds....that noise....didn't help.
I had parked by the Bend Parkway...noisy, big truck noise, late night traffic for long haulers and others. So that didn't help either.
So decided to stay up. Not much sleep it seems.
End of this day Oct 14 and kicking in to start my next day October 15 already.
